City of Farmington Hills Fall Yard Waste Pickup Ends Week of Dec. 9

The final pickup of the season will happen on residents’ regularly

scheduled waste collection day and will resume in spring 2025

The City of Farmington Hills Department of Public Services Division of Public Works is reminding residents that the final yard waste pickup of the year is scheduled for the week of Dec. 9 on residents’ regular collection day.

“As the weather changes from fall to winter, the City’s Division of Public Works shifts its focus from collection of lawn clippings and leaves to removing snow and ice from our City’s roads,” said Division of Public Works Superintendent Derrick Schueller. “We want to make sure residents have enough time to gather all their leaves, twigs and other yard waste and get it to the curb before the winter season arrives.”

There are four options for yard waste disposal in the City of Farmington Hills:

  • In the bag: Break down yard waste and fill brown paper yard waste bags to leave at your curb. You’ll need to roll the bags closed, so be careful not to overstuff them.
  • In the can: Place yard waste in a trash can with a yard waste sticker on both sides. Yard waste stickers are available for free at City Hall or the DPW. These containers are limited to 35-gallon size.
  • Make a bundle: Brush and small limbs of six inches in diameter or smaller can be tied in bundles no longer than four feet in length and weighing no more than 60 pounds per bundle. Unbundled brush, large limbs and large quantities of dirt or sod will not be picked up.
  • Go green: Use a mulching mower to break down leaves and grass clippings to turn yard waste into eco-friendly lawn fertilizer.

Acceptable yard waste includes leaves, grass, shrub clippings, twigs and other plant materials, as long as it fits in your chosen container. Brush or twigs placed in cans or bags should not stick out above the top of the container.

In accordance with the City’s refuse contract and Michigan laws governing yard waste disposal, yard waste cannot be picked up after the week of Dec. 9. Any accumulated yard waste should be stored until pickup resumes the week of April 7, 2025.
