The Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office (WRC) is expected to close Middlebelt Road between 9 Mile Road and 10 Mile Road in Farmington Hills on Tuesday, Sept. 3, to relocate a sanitary sewer line adjacent to the culvert that carries the Shiawassee Creek under the road.

The work is being done in anticipation of the Road Commission for Oakland County’s (RCOC) project to replace the 63-year-old culvert that will start when the WRC work is completed.

Once the road is closed, it is expected to remain closed until the culvert replacement is completed in early November.

During the closure, access to homes and businesses along this section of Middlebelt Road will be maintained north and south of the sanitary sewer and culvert work, which is just north of 9 Mile Road. The detour for through traffic is 9 Mile Road to Inkster Road to 10 Mile Road, back to Middlebelt Road and vice versa.

The $480,000 culvert project is funded by RCOC and, in addition to replacing the culvert, includes:

1. Placement of new concrete curbs and gutters in the vicinity of the culvert.

2. Placement of new asphalt in the vicinity of the culvert.

3. Relocation of a water main by the City of Farming Hills.

Springline Excavating LLC of Farmington Hills is the contractor for the replacement of the 63-year-old culvert.

This segment of Middlebelt Road carries approximately 14,790 vehicles daily.
