Water and Sewer Utility Line Insurance

The City has recently learned that residents are being contacted by companies trying to sell insurance policies for water and sewer utility lines that run from private homes to the public sanitary sewer or water main. Since these utility lines are on private property, the repair or replacement of any failing lines would be the responsibility of the homeowner.

The City of Farmington Hills does not endorse or represent any of these insurance companies and encourages homeowners to get all the facts before deciding whether or not to purchase a policy. In most cases, water and sewer service lines can last decades before they need to be repaired or replaced. Therefore, many factors should be considered before purchasing a policy including the age of the home, invasion from tree roots, and whether your homeowner’s insurance policy covers this type of damage.
