Voter Registration
To register to vote in Michigan, an individual must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be at least 16 years old (18 when you vote)
- Be a Michigan resident and a resident of your city or township for at least 30 days (when you vote)
- Not currently serving a sentence in jail or prison
Where to submit your Voter Registration application
Voter registration applications are accepted at your local Clerk's Office, any Secretary of State Branch Office, the County Clerk's Office, designated state agencies or military branch offices, as well as by mail and online. Within 14 days of an election and on Election Day, voters may only register by visiting their local Clerk’s Office in-person with proof of residency documentation.
Register in-person at your local Clerk’s Office
Requirements: Michigan Driver’s License or Michigan ID number OR Last 4-digits of Social Security number
Deadline: Voters have until 8:00pm on Election Day to register to vote in-person at their local Clerk’s Office. Within 14 days of an election voters registering to vote in-person must present proof of residency.
Register by mail (Registration by mail is not available within 14 days of the election)
Requirements: Michigan Driver’s License or Michigan ID number OR Last 4-digits of Social Security number
Printable applications are available online. Voters may also pick up an application at their local Clerk's Office or request that one be mailed to them. Completed applications can be mailed or emailed to the local Clerk.
Deadline: Mailed or emailed voter registration applications must be sent to your local Clerk at least 15 days prior to Election Day.
Register to vote online (Online registration for is not available within 14 days of an election)
Requirements: Michigan Driver’s License or Michigan ID number AND Last 4-digits of Social Security number
Visit the Michigan Voter Information Center at Michigan.gov/Vote to submit your application online.
Deadline: Voters may register to vote online 15 or more days prior to Election Day.
Residency verification documents for registering within 14 days of Election Day:
During the 14 days prior to each Election and through 8:00pm on Election Day, voters will need to register to vote in-person with their local Clerk and present two (2) forms of proof of residency (paper or electronic) to be eligible to vote in that Election. Proof of residency documents must list your current name and address. Examples include:
- Michigan Driver’s License, State ID card or Passport
- Current utility bill
- Insurance documents (health, car, home, etc.)
- Financial Aid or school enrollment documents
- Bank or credit card statement
- Lease agreement
- Paycheck or government check
- Other government document
